This #TBT: Confucius

This Throwback Beard Thursday is a total throwback to world history class: who remembers Confucius?

Confucius was an accomplished intellectual and teacher in Ancient China (500 BCE), but unlike many scholars of his day, he believed in the value of engaging in public service and widely available education. In fact, he was one of the first people to establish teaching as a career. While parents would instruct their children and bosses their subordinates, Confucius pioneered teaching for the advancement of society.

He also saw education as a means to train well rounded, outstanding individuals, advocating for self improvement through social engagement.

The main part of his legacy, however, is Confucianism, the system of thought derived from his way of life. Based in moral living, social values, and the power of relationships, Confucianism is arguable one of the most influential tradition within Chinese society, enduring for almost 2,000 years.

Then again, we certainly think his beard is a more than worthy legacy.
